‘The Prom’ was the final leg in our motorhome adventure through coastal Victoria. After spending a few weeks in our ‘home on wheels’, we were so excited to return to our favorite pure haven and base ourselves right here for the week to camp, hike, swim and explore. As we drive alongside the long and winding street hugging the shoreline and enter Wilsons Promontory National Park, we are greeted by large granite peaks and towering sand dunes. The blood orange lichen boulders contrast with the sensible turquoise waters. It is so good to be again to my pure sanctuary, my happy place.
This 19-kilometre (return) stroll could be accomplished in a day and takes you through mountains, temperate rainforest and ultimately to one of the Prom’s most beautiful, sheltered and secluded seashores. It’s an enormous enchancment on what Sealer’s Cove was used for 100 years ago, when it was the positioning of significant sealing and whaling exercise and later, timber logging. Darby River – Halfway between the gateway and the Tidal River camping ground is one other stunning river that flows gently under the street. The Darby River flats are host to numerous species of native wildlife and the odd deer or feral cat can generally be seen. Spectacular coastal beauty, iconic Aussie wildlife, kilometres of white sandy beaches, rocky lookouts, and native vegetation, some that’s unique and rare.
If you’re travelling with a special someone, this four-star spot overlooking the Prom could be the place for some wild romance. This self-contained cabin sleeps two visitors in a king-size mattress, and there’s an enormous spa bathtub that links the open kitchen, bed room and dwelling space with the undercover out of doors lounge. The view from the spa appears out on 10 acres of forest across to the Prom, meaning you’ll find a way to stargaze whilst you bathe.
For all Top Parks places or to hitch the G’DAY Rewards Program, head to Panoramic views to Darby Saddle, Corner Inlet and Cotters Beach are provided as this stroll climbs through open banksia and stringybark woodland by way of a tumble of granite boulders. Experience magnificent views of Darby Swamp, Vereker Range, Darby and Cotters Beach. Starting at Darby River carpark, climb gently by way of windswept coastal vegetation.
– Once back at camp visitors can go for a sizzling shower, then we’ll prepare dinner a BBQ for dinner and loosen up in the camp chairs, throw the frisbee, take pleasure in a drink and some music. For these visitors that love stargazing we will go for a brief stroll out to Norman Bay seashore to see the evening sky and hopefully the milky method. – When we depart Squeaky Beach we’ll walk to Pillar Point lookout which provides unbelievable views over each Squeaky Beach and Norman Bay.
Another of Wilsons Prom’s in style walks is the 3.7 km Mt Bishop Walk (each way). As you walk the path, you’ll take pleasure in expansive views over the west coast of the Prom and its offshore islands. Standing at 319 metres, the summit of Mount Bishop rewards walkers with panoramic views over Squeaky Beach and Whisky Bay. Park at Lilly Pilly Gully car park or take a brief walk from Tidal River through Lilly Pilly Link Walk. The Prom is residence to quite lots of distinctive Australian wildlife, including wombats, wallabies, echidnas, and the iconic kangaroos. It’s also residence to a population of the largest Australian bird – the emu.

From the park gateway to Tidal River Camp Grounds is roughly a 20 minute drive with an 80 km/h pace limit. The local Aborigines referred to as Wilsons Promontory ‘Wamoon’ or ‘Wamoom’. It was subsequently named by the explorer George Bass who sighted the promontory on January 2, 1798.
There are stunning white sand seashores, gorgeous coastlines, thick bushland, big granite mountains and an abundance of native wildlife. Perhaps the most well-liked national park in Victoria, “The Prom” boasts the state’s largest coastal wilderness area and is positioned on the southernmost point of mainland Australia. Its tranquil inlets, granite-strewn shores, and lush fern-filled forests appeal to tons of of hundreds of vacation makers yearly, with no high-rise buildings in sight. The park’s 130km coastline is surrounded by a rugged panorama of eroded granite peaks, cliffs, and mountains, in addition to forests and fern gullies.
Squeaky Beach is probably considered one of the highlights of Wilson’s Promontory and is known for it’s squeaky white sands. When visiting Squeaky Beach it’s price contemplating strolling over from Tidal River and by way of the Pillar Point lookout, so you probably can explore the granite boulders at the much less busy end of the seaside. For these quests brief on time, there’s a carpark at Squeaky Beach and it’s solely a short 200m walk to the seaside.
This latter association grades into Eucalyptus baxteri low-woodland. It is the most widespread affiliation that happens on moderately well-drained sites. This affiliation is usually replaced by Eucalyptus baxteri woodland and then Melaleuca squarrosa thickets on websites with more and more poor drainage (Parsons 1966, pl. 37, fig. 3). Other species that generally occur on this affiliation are Banksia marginata, Epacris impressa, Hakea sericea, Hypolaena fastigata, Isopogon ceratophyllus, Leucopogon ericoides, L. Virgatus, Lomandra filiformis and Xanthorrhoea australis (Plate 6d).
The fun starts at the automotive park with a winding path of low ferns, a creek after which the reveal of Squeaky Beach with its distinctive gray and burnt-orange granite boulders. These colors contrast dramatically with the white sand and blue water and sky, so it can be fairly a spectacle to take in. Adventure seekers can take on an overnight hike by way of The Prom, exploring the remote and rugged northern regions or heading south to go to the historic Wilsons Promontory Lightstation and Sealers Cove. For a more tranquil experience, enjoy the secluded beaches of Wilsons Prom, similar to Cotters Beach, Whisky Bay, and Fairy Cove. Accessible options, together with all-terrain wheelchairs, TrailRiders, and beach wheelchairs, can be found to ensure everybody can enjoy the park’s pure beauty.
